This year I was told that I needed to have a Science Word Wall in my classroom. Well, I don’t believe in word walls because they are not useful to the students when they can’t interact with them. After all, word walls are just a list of vocabulary words on a wall. How can they really help our students? Have you ever seen your students actually look at the wall? What good are the words if they can’t see the definition?
So, I thought long and hard on how I can make a word wall that my students can interact with and would increase their knowledge. I started with a template for the vocabulary
words and added a picture if possible. Then, I added the definitions using the same template so that I could attach the definitions to the back of the vocabulary words. I printed the file on plain bright white paper and cut out the templates. Once they were all cut out I glued the vocabulary words to colored card stock creating a matted look. Next, I cut out the vocabulary words and then glued the definitions to the back of each vocabulary word. Then I eliminated each word and created my bulletin board. Instead of stapling the words I used push pins to attach the words so my students can take the words off the bulletin board and use them in class. They are able to use them as flash cards for review or if they just forgot the meaning of a word.
My students really enjoy using the “Word Wall” and my classroom greeters love showing it off to visitors. Many times saying, “We are the only ones in our school with and interactive word wall.”
